Psychiatry Box 001/Biography Box
The Biography Box contains the life of a female urban nomad.
Its interior houses a cast map of her
life. Thin threads are stitched into the map, indicating the nomad's
migration routes. Though most nomadic migration routes are based on
seasons, the urban nomad's routes are based on people she loves. Her journeys, indicated by
the thin thread, stitch places and people together. Felt patches
represent her feeling of being protected at the various migration points; their
thickness varies...
The box's lid opens like a book: it contains short stories about the nomad's loved ones.
The box's false bottom consists of several drawers containing nomadic
wisdoms for those who have settled. The Biography Box was commissioned
by the
female nomad. She wanted her life to be fixed within a portable
object that she could take with her on future journeys. The Biography
Box was the first box to be built (1999), it was edited and updated in
2005 and again in 2008.
